Course Descriptions Visual And Performing Arts

Introduction to Art FA605 Grades 9-12 Year
This is a one year course - two consecutive semesters.  This course will emphasize an introduction to the theater arts and the development of all aspects of theater production.  Instruction will consist of acting, beginning group exercises, individual and group pantomimes and improvisations.  This may culminate in a production towards the end of the 1st semester.  The study of the history of theater through projects, reports and observation of film will also take place.  If schedule permits there will be children’s theater tour created for the elementary schools in our district both semesters.  This course meets the “F” requirement for a-g.   

Advanced Art FA607 Grades 10-12 Year
Prerequisite: Successful completion of Introduction to Visual Arts with a “C” or better or Instructor approval.
In Advanced Art, students expand their skills in drawing, painting, 3-dimensional design and print making. Special college-level projects challenge students to refine their production techniques and go beyond the limits of their own talent. Class may be repeated for credit. Full year meets UC/CSU "f" requirement, as well as the ten- unit AUSD Fine Arts graduation requirement.

AP Studio Art FA609H Grades 11-12 Year

Prerequisite: Must have passed both Introduction to Art and Advanced Art with a “B” or better. All students are required to fill out an application along with teacher recommendation before consideration.

Introduction to Ceramics FA610 Grades 10-12 Year
This course offers the student a wide range of activities in the clay medium, including hand construction, wheel-throwing and ceramic sculpture. It introduces a ceramics vocabulary and helps students appreciate and recognize good artistic craftsmanship. Full year meets UC/CSU "f" requirement and the ten-unit AUSD Fine Arts graduation requirement.

Advanced Ceramics FA612 Grades 10-12 Year
Prerequisite: Successful completion of Introduction to Ceramics.
This is the pre-vocational or pre-college level of ceramics in which design problems in clay construction, glaze and surface enhancement, aesthetic evaluations and studio processes are defined and pursued as individualized student goals. Class may be repeated for credit. Full year meets UC/CSU "f" requirement, and the ten-unit AUSD Fine Arts graduation requirement.

Marching Band FA618 Grades 9-12 Semester/Fall                                                                            This is a fall semester course. This course is designed to provide instruction for all marching units, including band, dance and pageantry with an emphasis on the fitness of the body and the mind.  During the fall semester, precision drills and marching routines are covered with special emphasis on half-time and parade routines and on physical fitness for health and performance.  The class meets 7th period with rehearsals and performances outside the regular school day. This course may be repeated for a total of 20 credits. Students will earn PE credits for this class.

Concert Band FA620 Grades 9-12 Year
This is a one year course - 2 consecutive semesters.  Concert Band is a visual and performing arts course with emphasis in instrumental music performance.  Students will study instrumental techniques and perform a varied repertoire of music. Students will have opportunities to listen to and analyze music, and study music theory.  Students will study artistic expression and develop an appreciation of a wide variety of music.  Performances and rehearsals outside of class are required.  This course meets the “F” requirement for a-g. 

Wind Ensemble FA621 Grades 9-12 Year
Prerequisite: 2 years Concert Band and director’s approval.
The Wind Ensemble functions as a performance ensemble and as an ensemble “class” in which students acquire technical skill, concept development and knowledge unique to music through ensemble and individual performance. Performances outside of class are required to meet the University of California "f" & "g" requirements. Students are required to participate in all performances and festivals. Full year meets UC/CSU "f" requirement and the ten-unit AUSD Fine Arts graduation requirement. This course meets the “F” requirement for a-g.  

Jazz Ensemble FA622 Grades 9-12 Semester/Spring
Prerequisite: Audition by instructor.
This is a spring semester course.  This small group performs at jazz festivals, concerts and community events. It is a group for students who appreciate jazz, blues and swing music. Class meets after school.

 

Orchestra FA602  Grades 9-12                                                                                                       Prerequisite: Audition by instructor.                                                                                                            This is a one year course - two consecutive semesters.
Orchestra is open to all students with basic performance skills on a string instrument (violin, viola, cello, bass). This course is designed to increase the sill and performance abilities of each student and to develop0 aesthetic and cultural values through critical listening. Sills in tone production, intonation, bowing technique, music reading and musical expression will be studied. Music theory, history, and composition will be part of this course. Students will perform medium to difficult literature from a variety of genres for performances in concerts and festivals. Music theory will be part of the course. Evening performances are required in this class. Grading is by progress, performance and written work.  This course meets the “F” requirement for a-g.  

Intermediate Orchestra FA102 Grades 10-12
 
Aztec Singers FA625 Grades 9-12 Year
Prerequisite: Audition by instructor.
This small group of selected singers and dancers represents the school at civic functions and competitive choral festivals throughout Southern California. All public performances and evening rehearsals are required. Course may be repeated for credit. Full-year commitment required. Full year meets UC/CSU "f" requirement and the ten-unit AUSD Fine Arts graduation requirement.

Concert Choir FA626 Grades 9-12 Year                                                                                                 This is a one year course - two consecutive semesters. Concert Choir explores choral music from a wide variety of cultures and time periods through study and performance. The core curriculum emphasizes the basics of vocal technique, sight-reading, music theory, and music history. Concert performances are required along with after school rehearsals that will be scheduled as needed.  This course meets the “F” requirement for a-g. 

Music History FA628 Grades 9-12 Year
This is a rigorous course which acquaints students with music from diverse cultures, as well as the history and theory of western music. Students should read at grade level. Full year meets UC/CSU "f" requirement and the ten-unit AUSD Fine Arts graduation requirement.

Introduction Drama FA614 Grades 9-12 Year

Advanced Drama FA616 Grades 10-12 Year
Prerequisite: Successful completion of Introduction to Drama.
Individual and group acting projects in acting & directing digital film and original works, will be the focus of this class. Full year meets UC/CSU "f" requirement and the ten-unit AUSD Fine Arts graduation requirement.
